Ashling’s Warhammer Online Guide was not created by a bunch of amateur gamers like a lot of WAR guides are. Three hardcore beta testers got together and created this guide. Microsoft PowerPoint 2007 presentations are a great way of communicating and influencing your clients, work colleagues or audience. One of the most important components within presentations are images. This article will show you how to take a group of images and turn them, as if by magic, into a PowerPoint presentation.

This technique works best where the images are closely related to the core theme of the presentation, for example, if you are introducing a new product range and you have just loaded a bunch of product images onto your computer.

You begin by choosing New from the File menu which displays the New Presentation task pane on the right of your screen. In the New Presentation task pane window, you click on the option marked “Photo Album…”.

When the Photo Album window appears, you begin identifying the images you want included in the presentation. You can click on the button marked File/Disk to browse for the images or you can import them straight from your digital camera or scanner.

Your images are imported and listed in alphabetical order. This is almost certainly not the order in which you want them to appear in your presentation. So the next step is to rearrange them by clicking on the arrow icons to move selected images up or down in the list. You can also remove images from the list by clicking the name of the image and clicking the Remove button.

Is the orientation of any of our images not quite right for this presentation? No problem. Just highlight the image then click on the rotate icon to change it. Not happy with the tonal qualities of an image? No problem. Click on the appropriate button to increase or decrease the contrast or brightness levels.

However important a part your images will play in the presentation, every presentation will need some text. The Picture Layout drop-down menu lets you specify whether you want one, two or four images with a title. (You can omit the title, though it is unlikely you will wan to do so.) You can also place the title above or below the image.

If you wish, you can also change the shape of your images. This is done in a drop-down menu called Frame Shape. The default shape is rectangular but also available are rounded rectangle, bevelled, oval, corner tabs, square tabs and plaque tabs.

Finally, click OK to create the presentation. To finish it off, you just need to click in the title box of each slide and add your text. And that’s it, a bona fide PowerPoint presentation automatically created from a bunch of images!

Whenever you create a new project in QuarkXPress, the New document window appears. Beginners will often create a new project and click OK without paying much attention to the settings in the New Project dialogue. Quark keeps the settings from the last project you created. If these are inappropriate for the document you are about to create, change the page size, orientation, margin and column guides as necessary.

Having set margins when creating a new project, many new QuarkXPress users will still feel inclined to position their text and picture boxes inside the margin guides, leaving an extra space. Remember, the blue lines represent the margin guides not the edges of the page. Normally, the edges of your text boxes will need to be positioned on the margin rather than inside them. There is no need to leave any extra space between the items you create and the margins.

Ruler guides are created by dragging the vertical or horizontal ruler onto the page. As well as providing a visual reference, guides can be used to align elements vertically and horizontally by snapping elements to them like a magnet. For example, if the tops of two text boxes are snapped to the same guide, both boxes will be the same distance from the top of the page. Guides are extremely useful aids but, if over-used (as often happens with new users), you end up with a page covered in confusing green lines. Consider using the measurements palette as well: entering the same x measurement for two boxes will align their left edges and the same y measurement will align their tops.

When using QuarkXPress, it’s often the case that you want to align a new element with something that’s already on the page and, if you are fond of using guides for alignment, you will probably drag a guide onto one of the edges of the existing element and then snap the new element to the guide. Bear in mind when you do this, however, that only the second element is actually properly aligned with the guide, since dragging a guide close to an object doesn’t snap the object to the guide; only the reverse is true. To have both elements correctly aligned, you will need to also snap the first element to the guide.

Microsoft Excel 2007 contains a very wide variety of formats that you can apply to your cells. Naturally, when you create your worksheets you want your formatting to be consistent. Although this consistency can be achieved by vigilantly applying the same formats to cells containing the same type of information, cell Styles offer much way of achieving consistency in formatting your data.

Cell Styles are located in the Style section of the Home Tab of the Excel Ribbon. When you click on the Cell Styles button the categorised Cell Styles gallery is revealed. The gallery offers a live preview; hovering over any of the styles changes the current selection within your worksheets, giving you a preview of what your data will look like if you choose that particular style.

The first benefit of using styles is that you apply several formats in one operation. For example, say we choose the style called “Heading One”; we automatically change the size, alignment and colour of our text. We can speed up the formatting process even further by using the Format Painter to copy styles into the other cells or even other worksheets. Simply highlight an area that already has a cell style applied, double-click on the Format Painter to make sure it stays highlighted then drag across the appropriate range(s) of cells. When you have finished, click once on the Format Painter to deactivate it.

Having applied cell styles in various parts of a workbook, you can take advantage of the most important benefit offered by styles; if we modify the attributes associated with any of the styles used in a workbook, the formatting of all cells to which those styles have been applied will automatically be updated.

When modifying a style definition, since we’re not directly applying formats to any of the cells, it doesn’t matter which cells are highlighted. To modify the attributes of a style, click on the Cell Styles button, right click on the name of the style and then choose “Modify”. You will then be presented with the six categories of formats which can be included in a style: Number, Alignment, Font, Border, Fill and Protection. The list is fairly comprehensive; it includes just about everything that Excel has to offer in the way of formatting.

You will notice that you have the facility is activated not deactivating categories as necessary. Any categories that do not apply to a particular style can simply remain deactivated (i.e., checkbox not ticked). Simply click on each relevant category and make your selections. When you click OK to confirm these changes, all cells to which the style has been applied will be automatically updated.
