The goal is to incorporate the hand so that it is not only proportionally and gestural right, but is in agreement in personality with the expression of the face.

For instance, an agreeable facial expression juxtaposed with a clenched fist may not yield the effect you want unless you intend to add an ironic twist to your portrait. On the other hand, a hand supporting the skull fits very well with a stern scowling expression.

First, absolute novices should not be attempting to render both the hand and portrait together. Things will quickly get muddled. The lesson for the absolute novice here is to get a grasp of the importance of acquiring a solid foundation of your skill.

In a pose where a hand supports the skull there is a faint forward tilt because the subject is slightly hunched and leaning forward. For the draftsperson, this situation translates into the presence of a faintly foreshortened and reclined portrait. In the hand/skull case this means that the chin is somewhat receding relative to the forehead.

As always, you should begin with the construct, which in this situation, includes the hand and the shoulder. If you first render the skull and then attach the hand to it you are really asking for trouble. The hand and the skull will lack cohesion and will give the awkward impression that they are two different objects that are coincidentally next to each other.

When drawing the complete arabesque be aware of the negative as well as the positive spaces. In addition, do not pre-measure any aspects of the complete arabesque. It should be rendered with as much fluidity as possible without losing your sense of size. Sketch first then verify.

Further build upon the complete arabesque by locating the face, hand, and shoulder marker
s and sizes. The internal architecture of the complete arabesque is initiated by blocking-in the primedarks and painting out the lights with a putty eraser.

What you are doing is to set the stage for rendering the facial features, the hand, and the shoulder. The hand must be positioned and proportioned in accordance with the skull and the facial features. The compression of the jaw into the palm must also be reckoned with.

Utilizing a sharp pencil you can now further develop the tone and form with cross-hatching, stumping down, and painting out. In this, you will be going back and forth hoping that you know when to quit. Rendering is about making decisions, i.e., knowing what to build up and, just as major, knowing what to leave out.

In the hand/skull situation you have to be extra careful how far you develop the hand. The hand should be seen as an extra element, that is, a supporting element that should not be part of the focus. Do not feel compelled to finish every element in your sketch. Everything in drawing is about balance and transferring your intent directly to the viewer’s eye.

In conclusion, it is critical to see the hand and the shoulder as parts of one whole. Starting your sketch with sketching the complete arabesque will help you greatly with maintaining this cohesion. Treat the hand and shoulder as supporting elements that surround the face. This means that you should render them in a subordinate role.

Lost season 5 is expected to be the best yet, this time revealing what happens when the Losties attempt to get back to the Island, and reveal what really happened when they left!

This season is expected to have less flashback and flashforwards than before.

Season 5 of Lost, one of television’s most maddening but addictive and creative serialized dramas, starts tonight with a one-hour retrospective “clip show” covering the first four seasons (judiciously, one would assume) then the two-hour premiere of the new season. Let’s just say this much for starters — Season 5 is crazy complicated.

And yet, if you’re an ambitious and eager person at heart, you could watch the one-hour clip show for helpful clues, and perhaps comb the Internet, starting with the Lost page on Wikipedia and then perhaps Googling “Lostpedia.” It might be a more efficient use of your time to study quantum physics in your off hours, however.

That should not be construed as anything remotely negative toward Lost, one of the few challenging series on mainstream television that doesn’t spoon-feed the American public a trite, easily predicted ending. The ambition and creativity — and yes, the confusion along those roads — are what fuel the basic greatness of Lost. It’s just that this is a particularly bad time to jump on the bandwagon as it’s rolling along. Renting or buying the DVDs and starting from the beginning? Yes, by all means. Tuning in tonight expecting to know what’s happening is like stumbling into a Latin class when all you’re really capable of doing is texting on your phone.

One of the myriad intriguing things about Lost in Season 5 is that it treats the flashbacks and newer flash-forwards as, well, flashcards. That is to say child’s play in the realm of following along with competency. Almost from the time the first frame comes into focus and the final credits roll two hours later, Lost enters a shifting realm of space and time, the after-effect of Ben (Michael Emerson) turning that super-cool wagon-wheel thingy and making the island disappear at the end of Season 4. Now, for those people still on the island, space and time are in your face and out of your mind. Just go with it. There’s joy on this ride.

Translation: This series just took a roller-coaster hairpin of a turn. If the latter stages of Season 3 and all of Season 4 marked a course-correction to the confusion that preceded it, the writers have apparently tired of making you feel comfortable in your grasp of what’s happening. When Jack (Matthew Fox) says, wearily, “How did we get here? How did all of this happen?,” you half expect the Talking Heads to be playing Once In A Lifetime in the background. Time has been “dislodged” in Season 5, and the operative words are not “where are we” but “when are we.” Seriously. They say that.

The essential storylines created by the end of Season 4 remain in place — the six people who got off the island want (and need) to go back. When we last saw Ben and Jack, they were looking at Locke (Terry O’Quinn), very much dead in a casket in Los Angeles. Locke is alive on the island, however. And Ben is trying to put the world, or at least the island, to right.

If this sounds like insanity, then you haven’t been watching. If this sounds like it makes sense, then congratulations on being caught up with the narrative storyline, but it’s all about to go — what’s the word? — insane. Season 5 starts three years from the end of Season 4. Although it seems like every tiny, precious little hint is some kind of spoiler to Lost fans, there’s no joy in giving away many of the ingenious twists you’re about to witness in the show, but setting up the structure is essential.

A lot can happen in three years. But as only Lost can, the series makes that point seem moot early on. There’s so much time-shifting and characters from the past meeting characters from the present that time itself becomes Dali-esque unless you’ve got a lot of Advil.

Having seen the first three episodes, the most impressive achievement is not the various machinations of new and old characters or the mind-bending use of time. It’s the parallel plotting, which is relatively easy to understand amid the motivational mental chaos.

On the one hand, you’ve got people off the island who are trying to get back on it, though someone is either trying to stop them or beat them there. On the other, you’ve got the people on the island (who we are familiar with) experiencing time-space flux and meeting a lot of the island’s original occupants (many we’ve never seen before). When these two plots ultimately meet — which might not even be this season — it’s going to be a sublime migraine.

There’s merit in discussing the notion of what’s confusing to outsiders and fans.

In Season 5, both the producers of Lost and the network itself would be lying if they told you they expected to get new fans. Stranger things have happened (see: Arizona Cardinals in the Super Bowl).

But the remaining episodes of Lost are like the (lesser number of) remaining episodes of Battlestar Galactica in that they are a reward for die-hard fans. These are the engrossing, final chapters of complicated mysteries.

They offer only confusion to new fans who try to pick up the narrative thread. And yet, complicated plot twists being the mind candy of serialized dramas, they offer glorious conundrums and heretofore unheard-of turns to the loyal viewer.

These Rubik’s cube dramas are easy to smirk at if you’re out of the loop or prefer closed-ended series where all is well in the 59th minute of every episode — and you don’t need Internet annotations to follow along.

Lost is a different genre, one that may infuriate even the loyalists, but there’s something impressive and rewarding in the density.

• Clear the startup programs: When you start up Windows, several programs start and get loaded on to memory. These take up precious memory. Ideally, you should remove them using the settings provided in the programs themselves. But, if you can’t, then use Startup Control Panel to do that. This program after its installation will be found in the Control Panel.

• RAM: A machine’s speed can be simply improved by adding more RAM rather than going for a CPU upgrade. Get some additional RAM and see the improvement. If you have adequate RAM, but memory supply seems to be bottlenecked, then use RamBooster. It routinely frees some memory and can be custom adjusted for your needs. There are several such programs, but most of them make your system unstable. I had found no such problems with Rambooster.

• Watch the programs in memory: Using software such as TaskInfo to find out which are the programs that are running in memory and weed out those that you do not need.

• Three-button salute: If you cannot get software such as Taskinfo, then just press Ctrl+Alt+Delete combination once to bring up the Close Program dialog box. Ideally, when you have all programs closed and your taskbar is empty, there should be just three programs in this box - explorer, system tray, and your antivirus program. All other programs should be a waste. Most common culprits are Microsoft office, RealPlayer, Winamp, antivirus scheduler, etc. Just remove all those that are not needed using Startup Control Panel or using msconfig from the Run dialog box.

• Increasing the performance of individual programs: You can increase the speed of a program, by setting the priority of the program’s process thread to either High or Realtime. Use TaskInfo (in Win 9x/ME) or Task Manager (in Windows 2000 by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del). Do not go overboard on this or your system will look very unresponsive.

• Active Desktop: Unless you run stock market price tickers on your desktop, deactivate Active Desktop to save memory. If you have enabled Active Desktop just to enable a GIF or JPEG file as the background, then convert the file to a BMP file and set that as the wallpaper without Active Desktop.

• Plain desktop: Remove the desktop background image and set it None. This will save some memory.

• Screen resolution: Set your screen resolution to 15 bit or 16 bit for both speed and saving memory. Set a higher level only when playing games and other such special stuff that require better resolutions.

• Clear the Desktop: Remove all unwanted icons from the desktop and shortcuts from the desktop and the quick launch bar. If you have shortcuts for CD drives, windows will check for their contents every time it loads up and cause a delay.

• Remove sound events: If you remove the sound events, your operations will get faster and are less likely to hang. To do so, go to Control Panel
